COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State University swept a SIAC baseball doubleheader against the Benedict Tigers on Friday afternoon at Tiger Field, while
Bradon O'Connor inched closer to the NCAA stolen base record.
Savannah State won the first game 15-4, then took the second game 7-2. Benedict falls to 5-41 overall and 2-25 in the SIAC. Savannah State, the top team in the SIAC, improves to 32-10 overall and 27-2 in the SIAC.
O'Connor stole two bases in the second game to reach 93 for the season. The NCAA Division II record for total stolen bases in one season is 96, set in 1987 by Cisco Johnson of Saint Leo College over 49 games. O'Connor would need four stolen bases in Saturday's final game of the season to break the record.
The Tigers trailed 7-3 after four innings in the first contest, but Savannah State blew the game open with four runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh. O'Connor went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Ryan Chesney went 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
In the second game, Savannah State held Benedict scoreless through the first five innings as the Tigers were held to three hits in the contest.
Jalen McDuffie had two of Benedict's hits, including a solo home run. O'Connor went 1-for-3, hitting a single in the sixth inning. He then stole second and third, before coming home on a groundout.
Benedict and Savannah State will wrap up their conference series with a single game starting at noon on Saturday. The Tigers will recognize three seniors –
Fareed Mizelle,
Jorge Baez and
Kerrion Phillips.
