Tigers Ready To Tackle Kentucky State

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The undefeated Benedict College Tigers take on the winless Kentucky State Thorobreds at 6 p.m. on Saturday, but Benedict Head Coach Chennis Berry said the Tigers are not taking Kentucky State lightly.

"They've played a very tough schedule," Berry said. "Kentucky State has a good football team."

Tickets are available at benedicttickets.com or at the gate on Saturday. The game will be available on HBCU League Pass Plus, available as an app on Amazon Firestick and Roku, or at https://watch.hbculpp.com/

The Thorobreds opened the season against perennial Division II power Delta State and fell 33-10. In week two, KSU played SIAC foe Fort Valley State, currently undefeated, and lost a close low-scoring battle, 9-7. Last week, Kentucky State took on Division I Dayton. The Thorobreds lost 46-3, but played the Flyers close in the first half. The combined record of their first three opponents is 8-1.

Kentucky State is the only team on Benedict's schedule that runs a triple-option offense. Berry said that offense can be tough to prepare for.

Last year, the Thorobreds defeated Benedict 34-28 in the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. Kentucky State outscored Benedict 17-0 in the second half and rushed for 450 yards in that game.

"We have a lot of motivation for this game," Berry said. "They're coming to our house and we want to protect the Jungle. We look forward to the challenge this week."

Benedict is 3-0 for the first time since resuming football in 1995 and possibly for the first time in school history. Through the first three games, Benedict has established one of the top defenses in NCAA D2. Benedict is giving up 190.7 yards per game to opponents, which ranks first in the SIAC and fourth in D2. Benedict ranks first in the SIAC and fourth in D2 in scoring defense, allowing an average of 6.7 points per game. The Tigers are coming off a 24-6 victory over Savannah State on ESPNU. Benedict running back Noah Zaire Scotland was named SIAC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 112 yards and one touchdown against Savannah State.
