COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers put up a valiant effort, but Edward Waters took a hard-fought 3-0 victory in a SIAC women's volleyball match on Monday evening in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Edward Waters won the match by scores of 26-24, 25-21, 26-24 to sweep the season series against Benedict and improve to 10-4 overall and 8-1 in SIAC play. Benedict falls to 11-4 overall and 8-4 in the SIAC.
Cana Smith led the Benedict offensive attack with nine kills, while
Kaiah Green and
Jordan Gilbert had six kills each.
Jadyn Murry and
Willow Alls both had double-doubles as Murry had 12 assists and 12 digs, while Alls had 13 assists and 12 digs.
Jordan Williams also had 12 digs.
Edward Waters had a 22-13 lead in the first set before Benedict stormed back, using a seven-point run to cut the lead to 23-22, then tied the match at 24 on a kill by
Nyla Troncoso. Edward Waters scored back-to-back kills to secure the first set.
Benedict had a 14-12 lead midway through the second set before Edward Waters scored five straight points to take the lead. Benedict scored three points in a row to tie the score at 18, but Edward Waters pulled ahead 20-18. A kill by Gilbert cut the lead to 21-20, but Edward Waters scored the next three points. Benedict scored the next point, but Edward Waters finished the second set with a kill.
Benedict had a 23-19 lead late in the third set, but Edward Waters surged with five straight points to take a 24-23 lead. An Edward Waters error tied the score at 24, but Edward Waters got back-to-back kills to secure the third set.
Benedict travels to take on Savannah State on Friday and Albany State on Sunday before returning home to play Morris on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
