FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Benedict College women's basketball team won their first game of the season as the Lady Tigers used a 10-0 fourth-quarter run to pull ahead and held on for a 65-64 victory over LeMoyne-Owen College in a non-conference matchup on Saturday.
LeMoyne-Owen scored the first four points of the fourth quarter for a 49-48 lead. Benedict then scored the next 10 points for a 58-49 lead with 4:23 left in the game. A free-throw by
Alaysia Nash gave the Lady Tigers their largest lead, 60-50, with 2:54 left to play. LeMoyne-Owen outscored Benedict 9-2 in the final minute and a half to cut the lead to one point.
The Lady Magicians led by as much as 10 points in the second quarter, but Benedict trimmed the lead to 30-29 at the half.
Kaya Evans led Benedict with 12 points, while
Taylor Christmas and
Amaya Ashby scored 11 points each.
Shakera Duncan had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Benedict, now 1-2 on the season, will take on Lane College in their SIAC opener on Saturday at home. The game time has been moved to 5 p.m. to accommodate the Benedict football playoff game at 1 p.m.
