COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Benedict College baseball team won three out of three against LeMoyne-Owen College after sweeping Monday's doubleheader 14-11 and 19-5.
Benedict improves to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SIAC, while LeMoyne-Owen falls to 0-6 overall and in the SIAC.
Taj Bates went 6-for-6 with four runs batted in over the two games. William Martinez went 3-for-6 with five RBIs.
In the first game, Benedict fell behind 8-1 after four innings. The Tigers put up a seven-run fifth inning to tie the game 8-8. Martinez hit a home run, driving in three runs to close the gap 8-5. Bates singled in a run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 8-8.
Justin Murray hit a solo homer in the sixth to give the Tigers the lead and they would never look back, winning 14-11.
In the second game,
Jalen McDuffie hit a solo home run, then
Elijah Banks doubled to left center to drive in three runs for the Tigers to take the lead 4-0 in the first inning. Bates hit a home run to drive in three more runs, and Murray drove in one run for an 8-2 lead. The Tigers added five more runs in the third to put them up 13-2. Benedict finished the game on a home run from
Jamie Taveras to drive in two runs, winning the game on a high, 19-5, before the game was called by the umpires due to darkness.
The Tigers travel to Jackson, Tennessee on Saturday for a noon doubleheader against Lane College.
