FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Benedict College baseball team scored six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and held on to beat Kentucky State 14-10 in a SIAC contest on Saturday to earn a split in their doubleheader.
Kentucky State won the first game 12-8, as
Taj Bates hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to close the gap, but the Tigers couldn't get any closer.
Benedict wraps up the 2023 season at 14-20 overall and 9-18 in the SIAC. Kentucky State goes to 19-21 overall and 16-13 in the SIAC.
Benedict trailed 7-3 entering the top of the fourth inning. The Tigers scored four runs to tie the game.
Jalen McDuffie had an RBI double, Bates brought home a run on a groundout, and
Fareed Mizelle hit a two-run homer.
The Thorobreds scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-7 lead. Benedict took the lead with five runs in the fifth inning.
Isaiah Canty hit a three-run homer,
Elijah Banks had an RBI single and
Jacob Hall brought home a run with a groundout to give the Tigers a 13-8 lead.
Canty went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Mizelle went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Banks went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Tymon Holloman earned the pitching win.
In the first game,
Jayden Jones added a solo homer. Canty had a double and drove in a pair of runs.
