Tigers Travel To Take On Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Benedict College Tigers return to conference action and look to get back in the win column when they take on the Kentucky State Thorobreds on Saturday in KSU's Alumni Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. There is no television or live stream available. Live stats are available here.

The Tigers (2-3 overall, 2-1 SIAC) are coming off last week's 38-21 loss to North Greenville, which saw Benedict give up a pair of long touchdown passes, fumble the ball inside their own 5-yard line, as well as other several other miscues and missed opportunities. The focus this week was to cut down on mistakes and be more consistent.

"We're working on consistency and discipline. We're doing the little things," Benedict head coach Ron Dickerson Jr. said. "We've done some really good things in the first five games that this team has learned to play together. We've just got to keep chipping away and chopping wood and doing the little things.

"We did some really good things. But you can't win games when you drop four open passes and overthrow two open guys. You can't give up big plays, two 80-yard touchdowns, you can't do that. We had big returns, great punts, we had some great catches and great runs, but you can't fumble when you're backed up on the two-yard line with your back up against the wall. You can't make a big catch and then fumble. When you're a team that's growing and learning, you can't do those things. The outcome is going to be what it is. But we fought. For four quarters, we fought. That's a sign they're coming together and going in the right direction."

Kentucky State (1-5 overall, 1-3 SIAC) is coming off a 24-20 victory over Lane College last week for their first win of the season. The Thorobreds are giving up an average of more than 37 points per game, but Dickerson said they have talent on the defensive side of the ball.

"They've got two great interior defensive linemen. Their corners are really good," Dickerson said. "They're going to give you a lot of pressure, which will be a good challenge for us."

Kentucky State quarterback Denim Johnson leads the team in passing and rushing, and is a threat with the ball, Dickerson said.

"Offensively, they've got a great quarterback that scrambles, and he also throws the ball real good with short passes. So we're going to have to contain him and do a lot of things to keep our eyes on him, because he can beat you. They're coming off a win at home, and this is another home game for them. So we're going to have to go up there and play our A game."

After this long road trip, Benedict has their shortest road trip of the season next week, when they play Allen University at Westwood High School Stadium in Blythewood, S.C.
