COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Caleb Hymon hit three 3-pointers in a two-minute span in the second half to help lift the Benedict College Tigers to a 77-75 victory over Spring Hill College in a SIAC men's basketball contest on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Tigers were holding onto a 56-54 lead when Hymon hit the first 3-pointer with 8:39 remaining in the game. After the Badgers hit a free throw, Hymon hit another 3-pointer for a 62-55 lead. The Badgers scored on an offensive rebound tip-in, but Hymon hit another 3-pointer with 6:20 left in the game to give Benedict a 65-57 lead.
Spring Hill was able to get within four points, 71-67, with 1:18 remaining, but
Cadarius Baggett drained a 3-pointer for a 74-67 lead with 53 seconds left and the Tigers held on for the win.
Benedict improves to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in the SIAC. Spring Hill falls to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the SIAC. The Tigers remain unbeaten against Spring Hill, having won all 10 previous meetings over the past nine years.
Hymon and
Jordan Butler led the Tigers with 19 points each.
Donte Whymns added 13 points and
Tariq Shepherd chipped in 10 points. Spring Hill's Walter Peggs Jr., the SIAC's leading scorer, led the Badgers with 26 points. He scored 23 in the first half, but the Tigers held him in check in the second half with just three points. Steven Lyles added 24 points, 17 in the second half.
The Tigers return to action with a trip to Uncasville, Connecticut, where they will compete in the Chris Paul HBCU Challenge Tournament. Benedict will face Lincoln University from the CIAA on Thursday at noon. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+. They will face either Kentucky State or Winston-Salem State on Friday in the tournament's consolation or championship game.
