COLUMBIA, S.C. – Augusta University used a three-point play to snap a late comeback bid by the Benedict College women's basketball team and took a 57-46 victory in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict scored five straight points to trim Augusta's lead to 49-41 with four minutes left in the game. The Jaguars used a three-point play to start a seven-point run, building the lead to 15 points, 56-41, with just under two minutes remaining.
Benedict falls to 3-6 overall. Augusta improves to 7-2.
Augusta hit a 3-pointer to start the game and never trailed. The Jaguars closed the first quarter with a 6-1 run to take a 16-9 lead after the first 10 minutes. Augusta led by as much as 14 points in the second quarter and led 31-20 at the half.
The Lady Tigers got within seven points, 37-30, late in the third quarter, and trailed 39-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Taylor Christmas led Benedict with 10 points, while
Ciara Hardy scored seven points.
Benedict will return to action on New Year's Eve with a 1 p.m. non-conference road game at Paine College in Augusta, Ga.
