MOBILE, Ala. – The Benedict College men's tennis team went 5-1 at the first SIAC Tennis Roundup in Mobile, Ala.
The Tigers easily blanked Fort Valley State (7-0), Morehouse (6-0) on Thursday, then blanked LeMoyne-Owen (6-0) and Lane (6-0), setting up a crucial showdown with Spring Hill College. Spring Hill defeated Benedict 4-0.
Benedict wrapped up the roundup with a 5-2 victory over Tuskegee.
Mark Chigaazira went 3-1 at No. 1 singles, falling to Tuskegee's Zamani Moyo for his only loss. He went 6-0 at No. 1 doubles with brother
Jason Chigaazira, including a 7-5 victory over Spring Hill's No. 1 doubles team.
Divgurjot Singh went 5-0 at No. 2 singles, dropping just two games in the matches he finished. He also went 5-1 in doubles action with partner
Anesu Kwirirai, with their only loss a tough battle against Spring Hill, falling in a tiebreaker 6-7 (3-7).
Jason Chigaazira went 4-1, including a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory against Tuskegee's Keith Moultrie.
Anesu Kwirirai went 4-0 at No. 4 singles, while
Richard Ngwarwi went 5-1, playing No. 5 and No. 6.
Jaylon Bokknight went 4-2, playing either No. 5 or No. 6.
The Tigers, now 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the SIAC, play a non-conference match against Converse on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Columbia Tennis Center.
