ALBANY, Ga. – Albany State's Johanna Bell hit a jumper with three seconds left to lift the Golden Rams to a 63-62 victory over the Benedict College Lady Tigers in a SIAC women's basketball contest on Monday night.
Kaya Evans sank two free throws with 19 seconds left to give Benedict a 62-58 lead. Albany State hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to cut the Benedict's lead to one point.
Amaya Ashby missed two free throws, setting up Bell's game-winning shot.
The Lady Tigers saw their losing streak extend to nine games, falling to 3-21 overall and 1-16 in the SIAC. Albany State snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 4-19 overall and 4-11 in the SIAC.
A 3-pointer by Evans gave Benedict a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Albany State pulled ahead by four points in the second quarter, but Benedict rallied to take a 27-25 lead at the half. The Lady Tigers held as much as an 11-point lead in the third quarter, 44-33, before the Golden Rams cut the lead to 44-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
A 3-pointer by Ashby gave Benedict a 54-44 lead with 5:23 left in the game. Albany State cut the lead to 57-54 with one minute left.
Evans led the Lady Tigers with 14 points, while
Aaliyah Lawrence added 12 points. Ashby and
Dashia Jackson chipped in 10 points each.
Benedict will take on neighbor rival Allen at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Allen.
