COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict College rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Johnson C. Smith for their first victory of the season in the first game, then
Olivia Townsend hit a grand slam in the second game to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Benedict won the first game 4-3, then took the second game 10-1 in five innings. The Lady Tigers improve to 2-11 on the season, while Johnson C. Smith falls to 0-6.
The Golden Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game on a two-run homer in the second inning. Benedict got an RBI double from
Briana Curney in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 2-1. Johnson C. Smith added a run in the third, but
Taylor Gilbert added an RBI single in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2.
After three scoreless innings, the Lady Tigers came to bat in the bottom of the seventh.
Shamaria Dupree led off with a double, and later came home on a JCSU error to tie the game.
Tre'sor Eady scored off another JCSU error for the winning run.
Townsend was the winning pitcher in the first game. In the second game, she went 3-for-3 with six RBIs, hitting a two-run blast in the first inning, then cleared the loaded bases with a homer to left field in the third inning to give Benedict a 10-1 lead.
Taylor Wilson had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
Savanna Marshall picked up the win in the circle.
Benedict will travel to North Greenville for a non-conference doubleheader on Friday.
