Benedict Tops Clinton, 3-2

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Desire' Young had a career-high 20 kills and T'yannah Lake had career highs with 13 kills and 21 digs as Benedict College rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Clinton College 3-2 in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
 
Benedict won the match 25-22, 23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 15-7 to improve to 3-1 on the season. Clinton dropped its seventh consecutive match to fall to 5-8 on the season.
 
Young had 20 kills on 34 attacks with just four errors for a .471 hitting percentage. She also had four solo blocks. Willow Alls had a career-high 38 assists to go along with 10 digs and three service aces.
 
The first set was tied at 22 when the Lady Tigers scored two points on Clinton errors and a kill by Young. Clinton jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the second set. Benedict later rallied with nine consecutive points to take a 19-17 lead. The score was tied at 23 before Clinton closed out the set with a pair of kills. Clinton jumped out to another big lead in the fourth set, taking a 14-5 lead. The Lady Tigers were not able to rally back in that set and the Bears cruised to a 25-14 victory and take a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set was close again, with Benedict holding a 19-17 lead before the Lady Tigers reeled off five points in a row for a 24-17 lead. After a Clinton point, Young closed out the fourth set with a kill and forced a deciding fifth set.
 
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the fifth set as Young had a pair of kills and Kaiah Green added another kill, and Young served an ace. Clinton got within 13-7, but Benedict got a kill from Young and Alls served an ace to close out the match
 
Benedict will travel to Albany, Ga., to compete in the SIAC Crossover Tournament, where they will face LeMoyne-Owen, Lane, Tuskegee and Spring Hill over two days. The next home match will be Sept. 27 against Allen at 6:30 p.m.
