ATLANTA, Ga. -- After last week's exciting last-second victory over Edward Waters, the Benedict College Tigers look to keep the winning ways going when they travel to Atlanta to take on Morehouse College on Saturday.
Â
Kickoff is 1 p.m. from B.T. Harvey Stadium. There is no television or live stream for the game. Live stats will be available
here.
Â
"After 24 hours, we had to let that win go and get ready for Morehouse. They're a great opponent and we have to play in their stadium," said Benedict head coach
Ron Dickerson Jr.
Â
The Maroon Tigers are 1-3 on the season, coming off a come-from-behind 31-28 victory over Kentucky State in Chicago's Soldier Field last week. That game had a similar script as Benedict's win over Edward Waters. The Maroon Tigers had to hold Kentucky State on a late third down play and received a punt with 1:26 remaining in the game. Morehouse then traveled 80 yards, scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 24-yard pass with 10 seconds remaining for their first win of the season.
Â
"They're a good team coming off a big win, kind of like ours. So they've got confidence coming into this game and they have the home field advantage."
Â
The Tigers have averaged more than 350 yards of offense over the last two games, and Dickerson sees Benedict's offense coming together under first-year transfer quarter
Charles "Tre" Simmons.
Â
"We're just growing. I think Tre's starting to come into his own. And we've just got to be more consistent on offense, whether we're running the ball or blocking or throwing the ball. And that's what we worked on going into last week's game and that's what we're working on now."
Â
For the first three weeks, the Tigers have given up an average of more than 200 yards rushing per game. Morehouse averages just 34 yards rushing per game, but puts up big passing numbers, averaging more than 250 yards per game, and threw for 369 yards last week against Kentucky State. And on defense, Morehouse lines up in a 3-4 defense, with three down linemen and four linebackers. And Dickerson said the Tigers need to continue to cut down on penalties.
Â
"We're still, as a new, young team, making dumb penalties. We're working on the penalties, working on watching the ball, and doing the little things," Dickerson said. "They like to throw the ball a lot, so we had to work on still stopping the run, but also stopping the pass. They give a different front on defense. They give a three down. And for three weeks, we've seen a four down. That takes a lot of work for guys to understand that."
Â
After this week's road trip, the Tigers return home next week to take on North Greenville in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
