COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak with a 50-48 victory over Savannah State in a SIAC men's basketball game on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict held Savannah State to an opponents season-low 48 points, and an opponents season-low shooting percentage. The Benedict defense held Savannah State to just 19-of-65 shooting (29.2 percent).

Benedict used a 9-0 run in the first half to break away from a 10-10 tie and build a 19-10 lead. Benedict held a 25-18 lead at the break.
In the second half, Savannah State cut the lead to 29-27 before the Benedict Tigers scored the next seven points to push the lead back to nine points, 36-27, with 12:19 remaining. Benedict took its largest lead of the game, 40-29, after a
Donte Whymns layup with 10:11 left to play. Savannah State trimmed the lead to 41-38 with 6:09 left to play.
Cadarius Baggett hit a 3-pointer with 4:07 on the clock to make it 47-40.
After Whymns hit two free throws with 38 seconds left for a 49-43 Benedict lead, Savannah State scored with 21 seconds remaining.
Tariq Shepherd hit one free throw with 16 seconds remaining and Savannah State hit a 3-pointer to close out the game for the final score.
Whymns led the Tigers with 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Caleb Hymon added 10 points.
Savannah State falls to 7-8 overall and 5-6 in the SIAC. Benedict improves to 4-15 overall and 4-9 in the SIAC.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday night, hosting rival Claflin University at 7:30 p.m. in the HRC Arena.
