COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers had three players in double-figure kills as they defeated Allen University 3-1 on Thursday night at Allen's John Hurst Adams Gymnasium.
Benedict won the match 25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21 to move to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in the SIAC. Allen falls to 10-11 overall and 7-7 in the SIAC.
Mia Burgess led the Lady Tigers with 14 kills, while
Desire' Young and
Angelic Carter had 10 kills each.
Willow Alls had 26 assists. The Lady Tigers were strong defensively, recording 60 digs, their third-highest total of the season.
La'Jai Wilson led the defensive charge with 13 digs, while
Jadyn Murry and Burgess had 12 digs each.
Benedict used a 7-0 run in the first set to take a 12-6 lead and held on for the 25-17 win. Young scored a kill for the final point.
Allen had a 20-18 lead in the second set, but Benedict closed out the set by scoring the final seven points, with the final five points coming from kills. Burgess scored the set-winner.
Allen used a 5-0 run in the third set to pull away and take the 25-16 victory and avoid the sweep.
In the fourth set, the Lady Tigers used a 6-0 run to take a 16-7 lead on one service ace, a kill and four Allen errors. Allen cut the lead to 24-21 late in the set, but the Lady Tigers closed out the match on a kill by
Akili Jones.
Benedict will return to action on Saturday, with a home match against Edward Waters at 6 p.m.
