Benedict's Mullins Named National HBCU Player Of The Week

The Benedict Tigers needed a miracle to win their NCAA Division II first round playoff game.

And that's exactly what the Tigers got.

Benedict wide receiver Malik Mullins was named HBCU National Player of the Week by BoxToRow after catching four passes for 126 and a touchdown as the Tigers defeated Wingate 25-24 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. On the game's last play, quarterback Jackson Jensen threw a short pass to the left side to Charles Simmons who advanced the ball until the Wingate defenders closed in, then threw a backwards lateral pass to Mullins on the opposite side of the field. Mullins then ran down the right sideline almost untouched until he got to the 10 yardline, where he knocked down a Bulldog player and scored the game-winning touchdown.

This is Mullins' second year in the program. He has caught 24 passes for 428 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 17.2 yards per reception.

Historically Black Colleges and University's (HBCUs) are successful in producing outstanding student-athletes and athletic programs and have made great strides for over 100 years. But during most of that time, schools were underrepresented in their coverage by the media.

FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW is the only nationally syndicated sports talk show which also places major emphasis on HBCU Sports. The show talks all sports and has broadcast live from Radio Row at The Big Game and from NBA All-Star Weekend as well as from the U.S. Open. BOXTOROW, as it is also known, was credentialed to cover the Super Bowl for the first time during the Super Bowl in Tampa in 2009. Other events covered include MLB All-Star Games, NBA Finals, NHL All-Star Game and the Daytona 500.
