COLUMBIA, S.C. – One day after failing to hold onto a 2-0 lead, the Benedict College men's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Life 3-2 on Thursday in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict won the non-conference match 16-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-12 to improve to 4-6 on the season. Life falls to 6-10.
After getting off to a slow start in the first set and trailing 22-8, the Tigers went on a late run but it wasn't enough. Life pulled ahead 17-11 in the second set before the Tigers were able to cut the lead to 21-20. Life closed out the set with four of the final five points.
In the third set, Benedict was behind 18-15 before going on a 7-1 run to take their first lead of the entire match. Benedict scored four points in a row all from Life errors. Benedict scored the final three points of the set from Life errors, including the set-clinching point from a service error.
The Tigers found themselves behind again in the fourth set, trailing 7-5 before eventually taking a 12-10 lead on a kill by
Camron Petillo. Life pulled back ahead 15-14 before kills by
Hakan Godoy and
Jared Brown gave the Tigers a 16-15 lead. With the set tied at 18, the Tigers reeled off seven of the final eight points, with a kill by Brown closing it out to force a deciding fifth set.
The two teams traded points early in the fifth set with the scored tied at 8-8. Benedict then scored three points in a row to pull ahead. They swapped points the rest of the way, but Benedict held onto the three-point advantage and
De'Andrae Taylor scored a kill to finish off the match.
Brown led the Tigers with 12 kills, while Petillo added 10 kills.
Kendersley Marcellin had 35 assists, and recorded a career-high six solo blocks. Benedict had 16 total blocks in the match.
Cameron Long had 13 digs.
Benedict will be back in action on Saturday with a road trip to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on Edward Waters.
