Benedict Rallies Past Central State, 3-2

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Benedict College scored the final five points in the deciding fifth set to pull out a 3-2 victory over Central State in a SIAC men's volleyball match on Saturday.

Benedict won the match 19-25, 26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 15-13. The Tigers improve to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in the SIAC. Central State falls to 6-16 overall and 5-5 in the SIAC.

Hakan Godoy had 12 kills and Jared Brown added 11 kills for the Tigers. Kendersley Marcellin had 40 assists on Benedict's 47 kills. Cameron Long led the defense with 14 digs. De'Andrae Taylor recorded nine total blocks (one solo and eight assisted), as the Tigers recorded 14 total blocks, their second-best block total of the season.

After Central State took the first set, Benedict had a 21-19 lead late in the second set. The Marauders scored the next four points, but Benedict tied the score with a kill from Taylor and a Central State error. After a Marauder kill, the Tigers closed out the set with three straight points on three consecutive Central State errors.

Benedict used an 8-0 run in the third set for a 17-9 lead and went on to take the set.

Central State took the fourth set to force a deciding fifth set. The score was tied at 8-8 when the Marauders scored four of the next five points for a 12-9 lead. They swapped points to make it 13-10. That's when the Tigers got a kill from Godoy, a pair of Central State attack errors, and Taylor was involved in a pair of blocks during the 5-0 run to win the match.

Benedict will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, April 13 at 3 p.m. as they host Morehouse College in a non-conference match. Benedict will honor seniors Taylor, Marcellin, Zion Beckford, Marlon Belizaire, and Jomari Jacobs.
