COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in conference play with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Savannah State on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Each set was a nail-biter, with the Lady Tigers edging out a 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory. Benedict improves to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the SIAC. Savannah State drops to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the SIAC.
Mia Burgess had a double-double with a team-high 15 kills and team-high 11 digs.
Nyla Troncoso had a career-high 14 kills to go along with three blocks.
Desire' Young had 12 kills and four blocks.
Willow Alls had 26 assists, while
Kylie Jackson also reached double-figures in digs with 10.
In the first set, Savannah State had a 20-19 lead late in the set, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to take the lead. Savannah State scored two of the next three points to cut Benedict's lead to one, 23-22. Troncoso had a kill and
Jadyn Murry closed out the set with an ace.
Savannah had a 19-15 lead in the second set before the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to tie the score. Savannah State outscored Benedict 5-1 to close out the set and tie the match at one set apiece.
Benedict scored the first nine points of the third set, and had a 21-12 lead late in the set. But Savannah State staged a massive rally to trim the lead to 23-22. A Savannah State attack error gave Benedict set point. After a Savannah State kill, the Lady Tigers closed out the set by scoring on another Savannah State error.
Benedict had a 16-8 lead midway through the fourth set, but once again Savannah State came back and cut the lead to 19-17. Benedict scored the next four points, all on Lady Tiger kills, to take a 23-17 lead.
Krislenn Lucas started off the surge with a kill, followed by a pair of kills from Young and a kill from Jackson. A kill by Troncoso finished off the set and match.
The Lady Tigers travel to take on Edward Waters on Saturday at 2 p.m.
