COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers built a 21-point lead in the third quarter, and then had to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by Savannah State to take a 76-71 victory in a SIAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers had a 49-28 lead with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter after a layup by
Raven Johnson, and maintained a 19-point lead, 68-49, heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, Savannah State outscored Benedict 22-8. Benedict had a 72-56 lead with 6:47 left in the game, but Savannah State went on a 15-2 run to cut the lead to 74-71 with nine seconds remaining. Benedict sealed the game with a pair of free throws by
Andrea Duncan with two seconds remaining.
Benedict improves to 7-5 overall and 7-5 in the SIAC. Savannah State drops to 6-7 overall and 5-7 in the SIAC.
Gwendasia Page scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Lady Tigers, while adding a team-high eight rebounds.
Alaysia Nash scored 17 points.
Benedict will play at Allen University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
