COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers extended their winning streak to seven games with a 77-66 victory over rival Allen University on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers used an 8-0 run to close out the first half to take a 42-28 lead at the half and then held off a fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Benedict improves to 14-7 overall and 14-7 in the SIAC. Allen falls to 13-8 overall and 12-7 in the SIAC.
Aaliyah Lawrence had a huge game for the Lady Tigers, scoring a career-high 23 points, while grabbing 14 rebounds, matching her season high, for her fourth double-double of the season.
Alaysia Nash added 15 points, while adding a team-leading four steals and three assists.
Gwendasia Page scored 14 points.
Benedict scored the final five points of the first quarter to take the lead, 20-17, and never trailed again. The Lady Yellow Jackets cut Benedict's lead to 34-28 with 2:35 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Tigers scored the final eight points of the half for a 42-28 halftime lead.
Benedict scored the first two points of the third quarter for a 16-point lead, but Allen trimmed the lead to seven points, 51-44, before Lawrence hit a 3-pointer to close out the third quarter and give the Lady Tigers a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
A 3-pointer got Allen within two points, 59-57, with 4:26 left in the game. Benedict scored the next six points, including a layup by
Raven Johnson, for a 65-57 lead with 2:32 left to play, and held on for the victory.
Benedict will play their final home game of the season on Monday, hosting Edward Waters at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers will honor three seniors -
Jordan Tanksley,
Kayla Fisher and
Ghylissa Knowles.
