ALBANY, Ga. – Albany State scored six points in a row in the second overtime to beat the Benedict Tigers 85-81 in a SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday.
Benedict had a seven-point lead, 62-55, with 1:30 left in the second half, but the Golden Rams staged a late rally and hit a jumper with three seconds left to tie the game at 66.
In the first overtime,
Caleb Hymon hit a layup with one second left to tie the game at 72 and send the contest into a second overtime.
Cole White scored a layup with 2:27 on the clock to give Benedict a 77-76 lead. The Tigers missed their next three shots, as the Golden Rams scored the next six points, all at the free-throw line, for an 83-77 lead with 18 seconds remaining.
Malachi Chavis hit a 3-pointer, and then hit a free throw with two seconds left to make it 83-81. The Golden Rams sank two free throws to clinch the game.
The Tigers had five players in double figures, led by Hymon with 16 points. White scored 15 points, while
Kameron Foman had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Chavis scored 13 points and
Landon Jeffries added 12 points.
Benedict wraps up the regular season at 11-13 overall and 11-13 in the SIAC. Albany State moves to 12-16 overall and 11-13 in the SIAC. The two teams are now tied for sixth in the SIAC East Division, but Albany State swept the two regular season meetings. The SIAC will announce seedings and pairings for the SIAC Tournament next week.
