COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team stretched their winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep over Paine College in non-conference action on Tuesday at Tiger Field.
Benedict won the first game 10-4, then held off a last-inning Paine rally to come away with an 8-7 victory in the second game.
The Tigers improve to 5-3 on the season. Paine falls to 1-6.
Jonathan Olmedo had a pair of home runs in the first game and drove in five runs.
Cameron Haley also had a two-run blast.
Milton Herring had an RBI double, and
Colin Jones had an RBI single.
Lefrederick Wooten went the distance on the mound, scattering seven hits and striking out five.
The Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning in the second game.
Christopher Trujillo Ruiz had a three-run homer,
Kenyan Conner Jr. and
Colin Jones had RBI singles, and
Kent Johnson brought home a run on a sacrifice fly.
Benedict added a run in the fourth inning when Haley walked and later stole home.
The Lions staged a seventh-inning rally, scoring seven runs. A wild pitch made it 8-6. A throwing error on a ball to the infield allowed another run to score, but the Tigers were able to tag the potential tying run out at home plate to end the game.
Benedict returns to SIAC action with a three-game series at Kentucky State, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
