COLUMBIA, S.C. – Edward Waters held Benedict to three hits, while collecting 19 hits to take a 17-4 victory in SIAC baseball action on Saturday at Tiger Field.
Edward Waters was leading the second game of the doubleheader 9-7 at the end of the sixth inning when the game was suspended due to darkness. The two teams will resume and conclude that game Sunday morning at 10 a.m., followed by the third game of the conference series.
Benedict (8-4 overall, 6-4 SIAC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Jaquez Akins reached on a wild pitch, while
Kent Johnson and
Joshua Medina walked to load the bases. Akins scored on another wild pitch, and
Cameron Haley drove home two runs with a double.
Edward Waters scored two runs in the second inning and tied the game with a solo home run in the third inning. Edward Waters took the lead for good with five runs in the fourth inning. Benedict cut the lead to 11-4 with a single run in the seventh inning, when
Lewis Brown scored on an error. Edward Waters (10-10 overall, 6-4 SIAC) scored six more runs in the top of the ninth.
In the second game, Edward Waters took a 4-0 lead before Benedict pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third on a three-run homer by Haley. Benedict took a 5-4 lead in the fourth as
Kenyan Conner Jr. scored on a fielder's choice and
Kent Johnson drove home
Colin Jones.
Edward Waters scored five runs in the top of the sixth to retake the lead. Benedict cut the lead to 9-7 in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Akins.
