ATLANTA, Ga. – The Benedict Tigers rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 victory over Clark Atlanta on Friday, and earn a split of their SIAC doubleheader.
Clark Atlanta won the first game 16-13 in a high-scoring affair.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the second game with three runs in the second inning.
Jaquez Akins hit a solo home run, and
Kenyan Conner Jr., hit an RBI double. Conner then scored on a RBI single by
Christopher Trujillo Ruiz.
Clark Atlanta scored a run in the third inning, then took the lead on a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
Joshua Medina led off the sixth inning with a home run. Akins scored on a steal of home, and Conner scored on a groundout to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead. The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by
Joshua Medina.
Lefrederick Wooten went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and did not issue a walk.
In the first game, Benedict took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Medina. Conner drove home two runs in the third on a single to give Benedict a 3-0 lead.
Clark Atlanta scored five runs in the third inning, and added seven runs in the fourth for a 12-4 lead. The Tigers came back to tie the game with eight runs in the fifth inning.
Cameron Haley hit a solo homer. Ruiz and
Jonathan Olmedo drew bases-loaded walks, and
Kent Johnson hit a bases-loaded double to score three runs. A Clark Atlanta error allowed two more runs to score.
Clark Atlanta regained the lead with two runs in the fifth inning, scoring the go-ahead runs on a two-out, two-run single.
Medina hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 14-13. Clark Atlanta hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to close out the scoring.
Benedict (16-9 overall, 14-9 SIAC) and Clark Atlanta (9-23 overall, 4-18 SIAC) will wrap up their SIAC series with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
