Brittany Jackson scored a season-high 19 points and Benedict College forced 27 turnovers as the Lady Tigers defeated Albany State University 77-42 in an SIAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict broke away from a close game by outscoring Albany State 45-16 in the second half. The Lady Tigers held the Lady Rams to 28.2 percent shooting for the game.
Benedict improved to 8-11 overall and 5-2 in the SIAC. Albany State dropped to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in the SIAC.
London Richardson added 13 points, while
Chelsea Whittaker had 11 points, all in the second half. She hit three 3-pointers.
A 12-3 run in the second half gave Benedict a 52-34 lead with 9:13 to play. After Albany State cut the lead to 52-37, the Lady Tigers reeled off 17 straight points to push the lead to 32 points.
The first half was close, although Benedict never trailed. Albany State cut the lead to 21-20 with 4:15 to play, but the Lady Tigers pulled ahead 32-24 on a 3-pointer by
Monique Weathers with 43 seconds left.
Benedict held a commanding 44-28 rebounding advantage and outscored Albany State 19-1 on second-chance points.
April Thomas led Albany State with 21 points.
The Lady Tigers return to action at home on Monday to face two-time defending SIAC champions Fort Valley State at 5:30.
