Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers played one of their best all-around defensive performances of the season to take a 74-49 victory over Paine College on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers held the Lady Lions to 22 percent shooting for the game, and shut down Paine guard Ashley Watts, holding the nation's leading scorer to a season-low 11 points. Watts shot just 3-for-11 from the floor, saw her playing time limited because of foul trouble, and had six turnovers. Watts entered the game averaging 27.4 points per game.
Benedict improves to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in the SIAC. Paine drops to 7-12 overall and 5-5 in the SIAC.
Santera Grooms had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers.
KaDeeja Vaughn also had 14 points.
Latoya Fairley added 13 points.
Watts scored a layup to cut Benedict's early lead to 8-5, but the Lady Tigers then scored 14 unanswered points to take a 22-5 lead midway through the first half and Benedict maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
Benedict took a 40-22 lead at the half as Paine shot just 6-of-32 (18.8 percent) in the first half.
Paine never got closer than 17 points in the second half as Benedict continued to play tough defense.
Brittany Belton scored on an offensive rebound to give Benedict its largest lead, 61-33, with 8:14 left to play.
Benedict continues its home stand with three games next week, starting with rival Claflin on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
