COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers closed out their home portion of the 2013-14 season and stayed in the hunt for the SIAC East Division championship with a 66-51 victory over Fort Valley State on Saturday in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Lady Tigers placed four players in double figures, including their three seniors who were recognized on Senior Day. Senior
Ashley Thompson had 13 points, while senior
Santera Grooms added 12. Senior
Latoya Fairley added 10 points, while sophomore
Jessica Ellison had 12 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
Benedict improves to 16-7 overall and 10-3 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State falls to 11-11 overall and 8-4 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers held Fort Valley State to 29 percent shooting for the game.
The Lady Wildcats held an 11-9 lead with 12:35 left in the first half when Benedict went on a 12-0 run to take a 21-11 lead after a jumper by Thompson with 5:30 left to play in the half. Fort Valley State's Davina High hit a 3-pointer just before the half to cut Benedict's lead to 29-20 at the intermission.
The Lady Tigers scored the first six points of the second half to push the lead to 35-20 and Benedict maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Brittnee Hazel led Fort Valley State with 12 points.
Benedict had a 43-34 rebounding advantage.
Benedict closes out the regular season with three road games, starting next Saturday at Clark Atlanta at 6 p.m.
