COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Jasmin Sledge hit a three-run homer to help list the Benedict College softball team to an 8-2 victory over Johnson C. Smith in the second game of a doubleheader to salvage a split in the Lady Tigers' home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Martin Luther King Park.
Johnson C. Smith won the first game 16-13 in eight innings. Benedict rallied from a 12-7 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, but then Morgan Hasty and Monique Jefferson had back-to-back homers in the eighth inning for the Golden Bulls.
Benedict moved to 2-5 on the season, while Wednesday's doubleheader was the season opener for Johnson C. Smith.
Kelsey Green picked up the win in the second game to improve to 2-1. She pitched five innings and held Johnson C. Smith to four hits.
The Golden Bulls took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run single by Hasty. Benedict came back in the bottom of the third to score four runs.
Sabriya Brooks hit an RBI single to score
BerGearia Major. Sledge followed with a homer to left field to score Brooks and
Kelsey James.
Torcealon Kelly led off the fourth inning with a bunt single, then stole second base. She came home when Major reached first base on a Johnson C. Smith fielding error.
Benedict added three insurance runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded,
Lapromise Boone walked to score
Victoria Bratton. Kelly filed out to right field to score Sledge, and
Cecelia Lykes scored on the same play when Johnson C. Smith misplayed the relay throw.
In the first game, Brooks had a two-run homer in the second inning to give Benedict a 2-1 lead.
Kelsey James had a two-run homer in the third inning for a 5-4 lead. The Golden Bulls recaptured the lead with five runs in the fourth inning. Hasty, who went 5-for-5 with seven RBIs in the first game, had a two-run double, while Monique Jefferson had a two-run homer.
Benedict cut the lead to 9-7 with two runs in the fourth, but Johnson C. Smith added a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh for a 12-7 lead. Brooks led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer. Lykes singled,
Alexandria McColley was hit by a pitch and Green had an infield single to load the bases. With one out, Major,
Kelsey James and Sledge had back-to-back-to-back singles, while Bratton walked with the bases loaded to bring home the tying run. A flyout and a groundout ended Benedict's rally.
Benedict travels to Fayetteville State on Saturday.
