ORANGEBURG, S.C. --- Kendall Jackson sank two free throws with eight seconds left to lift Claflin University to a 54-53 victory over Benedict College on Monday night in Tullis Arena.
Claflin improved to 11-10 overall and 8-4 in the SIAC. Benedict had a five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 11-8 overall and 9-4 in the SIAC.
Adolph Caldwell and Patrell Rogers each had 11 points for Claflin.
Andrew Crawford led Benedict with 18 points, hitting six 3-pointers in the first half, but was held scoreless in the second half.
Deonte Johnson added 12 points.
Benedict had a 14-point lead late in the first half, but Claflin cut the score to 34-28 at the half.
The Tigers had a 10-point lead, 50-40, with 5:33 left in the game after a basket by
Jordan Smith. Claflin's Adolph Caldwell hit a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left to cut the lead to one point, 53-52. Jackson sank his two free throws with eight seconds left, then Benedict missed a shot at the buzzer.
Claflin held a 41-30 rebounding advantage. After going 8-for-16 from beyond the arc in the first half, Benedict made just one of seven 3-point attempts in the second half. Benedict also struggled from the foul line, shooting 40 percent (6 of 15). Claflin shot 77 percent from the line (10 of 13).
The Tigers travel to face Albany State on Saturday.
