Benedict Takes Down LeMoyne-Owen, 84-70

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Benedict Tigers placed six players in double figures and handed LeMoyne-Owen its first conference loss with an 84-70 victory on Saturday night.

Rydealous Taylor led Benedict with 19 points. Jose Roman-Angueira scored a season-high 13 points, while Quiron Cooke also chipped in with 13 points. Quayshun Hawkins scored 12 points, while Christopher Spencer added 11. The Tigers continue to play without leading scorer Jordan Smith and leading rebounder Lafonzo Smith, who are injured. The Tigers were also without key reserve big man Elan Dejourdan as well on Saturday.

The Tigers improved to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the SIAC. The Magicians fell to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in the SIAC.

LeMoyne-Owen led 16-8 early in the first half when the Tigers connected on three consecutive 3-pointers to take a 17-16 lead. Benedict scored the final six points of the first half to take a 38-26 lead at the half.

Benedict led by as much as 18 points, 66-48, after a dunk by Roman-Angueira. The Magicians scored the next 12 points to cut the lead to 66-60 before Roman-Angueira snapped the run with another dunk. A three-point play by LeMoyne-Owen's Johnnie McGee cut the lead to 68-63, but the Magicians would get no closer. Brennan Reynard kicked off a 7-0 run, scoring all seven points by himself, giving the Tigers a 75-63 lead with 2:53 left to play. Two free throws by Taylor gave Benedict a 82-65 lead with 1:03 left on the clock.

Benedict shot a season-high 58.2 percent from the floor, making 32-of-55 shots. The Tigers matched their season-high with nine 3-pointers and shot a season-high 64.3 percent from behind the arc.

The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, with a home game against Spring Hill College at 7:30 p.m.
