Benedict Baseball Team Sweeps Lincoln University

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball swept a doubleheader from Lincoln University on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field, winning 8-2 and 11-1.

Yaniel Delgado pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five with no walks in the first game to pick up the win on the mound. Shomarii Thomas had a two-run homer in the first contest.

In the second game, Robert Troiano III pitched four innings, struck out seven and gave up just two hits and walked one for the win. David White Jr. had a two-run homer. Skyler Sabado had a bases-loaded triple during Benedict's six-run sixth inning.

The Tigers improved to 8-2 on the season. Lincoln fell to 0-2 with its season opener.

Benedict jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game. Armando Valentin led off the game with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. White's double scored Valentin, then Thomas' homer to left-centerfield scored White.

The Tigers pushed across another run in the second inning thanks in large part to three Lion errors. An RBI single by Andrew McCoy in the fourth inning made it 5-0.

In the sixth, the Tigers loaded the bases on a single by Daniel Young and walks to Joe Lucas and Joel Manzano. McCoy hit a fly ball to right field, which was dropped and allowed three runs to score. Lincoln broke the shutout with two runs in the top of the seventh on a Benedict error and a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers struck first in the second game when White and Reinaldo Santiago pulled off a double steal, with White coming home.

The Lions tied the game in the third inning by stealing home. Benedict took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third on White's two-run homer to left field. The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth inning when Thomas hit a double to left field to score White. Thomas later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.

A six-run sixth inning finished off the scoring. John Holleran hit a bases-loaded single up the middle and White followed with another sharp single to centerfield. With the bases still loaded, Sabado hit a ball to the right field corner to clear the bases, and came home when the Lions bobbled the relay throw.

The Tigers are back in action on Friday against Point University. The doubleheader will begin at noon.
