Benedict Tops Paine, 83-72

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Jordan Smith made a career-high eight 3-pointers to help the Benedict College Tigers to an 83-72 victory over Paine College in an SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

The Tigers snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 15-8 overall and 10-4 in the SIAC. Paine fell to 4-18 overall and 1-12 in the SIAC.

Smith finished with a season-high 26 points, going 8-of-14 from long range and 1-of-3 from inside the arc.

Brennan Reynard added 16 points and dished out eight assists, while Lafonzo Smith chipped in with 13 points. Quiron Cooke scored 10 points, hitting two 3-pointers.

The Tigers also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Lions 45-30, and had a 21-9 advantage in second-chance points.

The Lions led early in the game, taking a 19-13 lead on a 3-pointer by Christian Nobles. The Tigers rallied back and took a 22-21 lead on a 3-pointer by Jordan Smith with 7:52 left in the first half. The Lions pulled ahead 28-22, but the Tigers got a 3-pointer by Jordan Smith, a layup by Reynard and a 3-pointer by Cooke for a 30-28 lead with 3:10 left on the clock. Benedict took a 34-32 lead at the half.

Benedict maintained the lead the entire second half, although Paine cut the lead to one point on a couple of occasions, the final time at 54-53 on a dunk by Arnis Libazs with 10:46 left in the game. Benedict stormed back by scoring seven of the next nine points, thanks to a 3-pointer and a layup by Jordan Smith.

The Lions chipped away and cut the lead to 64-61 with 5:04 left to play, but the Tigers scored the next eight points, getting a layup and dunk by Lafonzo Smith to make it 72-61 with 3:40 left to play. When the Lions cut the lead to 74-68 with 2:09 left to play, Cooke drained a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a nine-point lead, 77-68.

Libazs led the Lions with 24 points.

Benedict is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Atlanta to take on Morehouse at 7 p.m.
