Benedict Tops Claflin With Walk-Off Single In 10th Inning, 7-6

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Armando Valentin hit a one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Benedict College Tigers to a 7-6 victory in an SIAC baseball contest on Tuesday at Tiger Field.

With one out, Marcelino Irizarry hit a sharp single that bounced over the Claflin third baseman's glove. Jerome Holmes, running for Irizarry, advanced to second when Skyler Sabado was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved the runners and Reinaldo Santiago walked to load the bases. Valentin hit a single to the gap in center field to score Holmes.

The Tigers improved to 21-9 overall and 5-4 in the SIAC. Claflin fell to 15-21 overall and 8-4 in the SIAC.

Yaniel Delgado, who came in with one out in the ninth inning and then worked out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th inning, earned the win to improve to 4-2. Keamond Eison, who pitched the final two innings for the Panthers, fell to 0-2 with the loss.

Benedict jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, scoring four runs on just two hits, four walks and a Claflin error. John Holleran hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run. David White Jr. singled to score Andrew McCoy. Shomarii Thomas doubled to score White. Yancy Freeny drew a bases-loaded walk for another run.

Claflin scored two runs in the second inning to cut the lead to 4-2, scoring the runs on a bases-loaded walk and a balk. The Panthers added another run in the third to cut the lead to 4-3.

The Panthers tied the game with a run in the sixth inning. Claflin took the lead on a solo home run by Jalen Thompson in the sixth inning.

Benedict regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sabado laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Jorge Moreno to tie the game at 5-5. Sabado later scored on a single by Santiago.

The Panthers tied the game in the ninth inning on an RBI single after a pair of walks.

Benedict travels for a three-game conference series against Morehouse this weekend. The Tigers and Maroon Tigers play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
