Newberry Edges Benedict, 87-84

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry Wolves used a six-point run in the final two minutes to take an 87-84 victory over the Benedict College Tigers on Monday night in Eleazer Arena on the campus of Newberry College.

The Tigers placed five players in double figures, led by Brandon Morris with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Umar Frost had a season-high 15 points and a season-high 16 rebounds for his first career double-double. Tyoun Shuford added 14 points, while Quiron Cooke had a season-high 10 points in his second game for the Tigers. Quayshun Hawkins, who spent his first two years at Newberry, had a double-double with 10 points and a season-high 10 rebounds.

The Tigers out-rebounded Newberry 56-38 and had a 21-16 advantage in second-chance points.  Benedict also outshot the Wolves, connecting on 43.2 percent to 39.4 percent for Newberry. The difference was at the free-throw line, where Newberry made 23-of-32 attempts (71.9 percent), while Benedict made 14-of-23 (60.9 percent). The Wolves also forced 22 Benedict turnovers.

Newberry improved to 12-4 overall. Benedict fell to 9-7 overall.

After trailing for much of the game, the Tigers used an eight-point run to tie the game at 54 with 12:21 left to play. The Tigers pulled ahead 59-58 on a 3-pointer by Hawkins. Benedict led by as many as seven, 69-62, on a 3-pointer by Shuford with 8:20 remaining.

A basket after an offensive rebound by Keon Scott made the score 73-68 with 7:25 remaining, but the Wolves chipped away and scored the next four points to cut the lead to one point. A layup by Christopher Spencer made it 75-72 with 6:33 on the clock. The Wolves went on a 7-1 run to retake the lead 79-76 with 3:28 remaining. A jumper by Spencer gave the lead back to Benedict, 80-79, with 2:15 left to play. The Wolves scored the next six points and pulled away for the victory.

D.J. Copeland led Newberry with 20 points.

Benedict returns to action on Saturday, traveling to face Fort Valley State at 3 p.m. in an SIAC contest.
