JASPER, Ala. – The Benedict College softball team opened the first day of the SIAC Crossover Tournament with a pair of wins.
The Lady Tigers defeated Tuskegee 10-9 as Khayreyah Parrish had a walk-off game-winning two-run home run in the seventh inning. Later, the Lady Tigers defeated LeMoyne-Owen 18-8 in five innings as Sharik Woods drove in five runs.
Benedict improves to 9-15 overall and 2-4 in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Tuskegee thanks to a five-run third inning. Brianna Billie had an RBI single, Tandreanna Conyers had a two-run homer, Erika Dargan had a bunt single to score a run and Starkeira Daniel had an RBI single.
Tuskegee rallied to take a 6-5 lead, and led 8-7 after the top of the sixth. Benedict tied the game on a two-out RBI single by Kelsey James. In the seventh, Tuskegee pulled back ahead on a solo home run. In the bottom half of the inning, Parrish hit a two-out homer over the left field fence to win the game.
Against LeMoyne-Owen, Benedict pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of five errors by the Lady Magicians.
LeMoyne-Owen led 6-3 in the second inning, but Benedict pushed across nine runs in the bottom of the second, then added five more runs in the third inning. Taylor Roberts went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Woods was 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Tiana Prince went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Benedict takes on Lane College and Spring Hill College on Friday.
