NEWBERRY, S.C. – Eight Newberry College pitchers combined to limit the Benedict College Tigers to just three hits and the Wolves defeated the Tigers 17-1 in a non-conference baseball contest Wednesday night.
Benedict falls to 14-8 overall. Newberry improves to 21-14.
Armando Valentin had two of Benedict's three hits and drove in the only run for the Tigers. With Newberry leading 14-0 in the sixth inning,
Yancy Freeny led off with a double to right-center field. With one out, he stole third and then came home on a groundout by Valentin.
Newberry scored 17 runs on just eight hits, taking advantage of 16 walks by seven Benedict pitchers, seven wild pitches and three errors. Ten of Newberry's runs were unearned.
Benedict is back in action with a home conference weekend series against Morehouse. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon at Tiger Field.
