COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team extended their winning streak to 10 games with a pair of five-inning wins over Fort Valley State on Saturday at Tiger Field.
Benedict scored 13 runs in the first inning of the first game and went on to take a 21-10 victory. Benedict won the second game 24-0 as Kendall James pitched a one-hit shutout and Starkeira Daniel had a pair of home runs.
Benedict improves to 20-16 overall and 9-5 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State drops to 3-20 overall and 3-12 in the SIAC.
Erika Dargan went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, smacking a two-run homer, in the first game. Sharik Woods went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Brianna Billie went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Amari Lawson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Dargan and Khayreyah Parrish each had three stolen bases.
In the second game, Benedict scored three runs in the first then scored 18 runs in the second inning. Benedict sent 21 batters to the plate in the inning, getting 18 runs on just six hits and three Fort Valley State errors. There were eight walks and two hit batters in the inning as well.
Daniel had a solo homer in the second and a two-run homer in the fourth. Kelsey James had a three-run homer in the second inning. Torcealon Kelly had a three-run homer in the second.
Kendall James struck out nine and walked just two for the win.
Benedict and Fort Valley State meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the third game in the conference series.
