COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team got home runs from Khayreyah Parrish and Erika Dargan to defeat Fort Valley State 10-2 in five innings and sweep the conference series on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The Lady Tigers improve to 21-16 overall and 10-5 in the SIAC with their 11th straight victory. Fort Valley State falls to 3-21 overall and 3-13 in the SIAC.
After Fort Valley State scored a run in the top of the first without the benefit of a hit, the Lady Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning when Tandreanna Conyers had an RBI triple and then Dargan brought home Conyers on a sacrifice fly.
Benedict added five runs in the second inning. Brianna Billie had an RBI single. Parrish later had a three-run inside-the-park home run.
Dargan's solo homer in the fourth pushed the lead to 9-2.
A FVSU fielding error allowed the final run to score in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game with an eight-run lead in the fifth inning.
Cherica Pye did not allow a hit to earn the win in the pitching circle, striking out four and issuing a pair of walks.
Benedict travels to Orangeburg next Saturday for a conference weekend series against Claflin.
