GREENVILLE, S.C. – Paine College scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Benedict College 6-3 in the annual Jackie Robinson Classic game at Fluor Field.
With Ricardo Pagan coming in to relieve starter Robert Troiano III in the eighth inning, the Tigers loaded the bases with a hit batsman and two walks. Aaron Ushery then doubled down the right field line to clear the bases.
Benedict falls to 19-10 overall and 9-4 in the SIAC. Paine improves to 17-15 overall and 9-4 in the SIAC.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Armando Valentin singled to score Andrew McCoy. Valentin later scored on a groundout by Troiano. Valentin led the Benedict offense, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
After a rain delay, the Lions took the lead in the sixth inning with a three-run inning. Matthrew Wray had a two-run triple for the go-ahead run.
Benedict tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning when Myles Snype led off the inning with a single. An error and a sacrifice bunt moved Snype to third and Darian Williams brought him home on a sacrifice fly.
Paine's Evan Krenz went the distance on the mound, scattering seven hits and striking out seven to improve to 10-2. Troiano, the reigning SIAC Pitcher of the Week, struck out 10 in seven innings of work. Pagan took the loss.
Benedict and Paine will conclude the SIAC series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Tiger Field in Columbia for Senior Day. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
