COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers put five players in double figures and made 12 3-pointers to take a 91-78 victory over Allen University in a men's basketball exhibition game on Thursday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The two schools separated by Taylor Street renewed their rivalry, playing for the first time since 2012 and just the second time in more than a decade. It was the first home game of the season for the Tigers.
Romello Jones and
DeShawn Graham led the Tigers with 15 points each.
Davante Wiltshire added 14 points, while
Tyrease Mapp and
Jalen Stegall added 10 points each. Mapp had a team-high seven assists, while
Ricky Peterson led the Tigers with eight rebounds.
Devonte James led the Yellow Jackets with 29 points.
Benedict jumped out to an early lead, taking a 17-6 lead after a 3-pointer by Graham with 13:34 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets rallied and took a 27-23 lead with 6:27 left in the half. The Tigers surged ahead, taking a 43-33 lead after a 3-pointer by
Jalen Stegall with 1:28 left in the half. Benedict had a 45-36 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Tigers jumped out quick and took an 18-point lead, 64-46, after a layup by Jones. Benedict took its largest lead, 79-56, after a 3-pointer by Graham.
Benedict, 0-2 on the season, looks to pick up its first official win of the season on Saturday when they travel to Carrollton, Ga., to take on the University of West Georgia at 5:30 p.m. The next home game will be Nov. 24 against LeMoyne-Owen at 3 p.m.
