CARY, N.C. – St. Augustine's scored five runs in the third inning to take an 8-6 victory in the first game, then rallied with four runs in the fourth inning of the second game for a 4-3 victory and sweep a doubleheader over the Benedict College Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the USA Baseball Complex.
Benedict jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game.
David White Jr. had an RBI single to score
Armando Valentin in the first inning. In the third inning,
Christopher Harper had an RBI double to score
Andrew McCoy, and Harper later scored on an error.
St. Augustine's scored five runs on three hits and a pair of Benedict errors in the bottom of the third inning.
Benedict cut the lead to 5-4 on a solo homer by
Javier Santiago in the fourth inning. The Falcons increased the lead to 8-4 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Anthony Johnson hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-6.
In the second game, the Tigers again jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Benedict got a run in the first inning. McCoy led off with a walk, stole second and third, and came home on a groundout by Valentin. In the third inning,
Fate Young led off with a triple and scored on a passed ball. White brought home
Myles Snype on a sacrifice fly.
In the fourth inning, St. Augustine's took the lead with four runs, on just one hit and a Benedict error. Benedict starting pitcher
Ricardo Pagan (0-1) walked three and was called for a balk before being relieved by
Fareed Mizelle Jr.
The Tigers failed to get a hit over the final three innings.
Benedict falls to 0-3 on the season. St. Augustine's improved to 6-1.
Benedict and St. Augustine's will meet again for a doubleheader on Monday in Columbia for the Tigers' home opener.
