SUMTER, S.C. –
Michael Garner drove in four runs and
David White Jr. hit his 15
th home run of the season as the Benedict College Tigers beat Morris College 13-2 in the first game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Monday afternoon.
Morris pounded out 13 hits and held Benedict to four hits to take a 13-3 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Benedict moves to 17-15 on the season, while Morris goes to 2-14.
The Tigers were originally scheduled to take on Paine in the third game of their conference series on Monday. That game was postponed due to wet field conditions at Paine. The Tigers instead traveled to Sumter to take on the Hornets for their second doubleheader in four days.
Benedict jumped out to a 9-0 lead through two innings in the first contest. Garner had a two-run triple and
Javier Santiago had a two-run double.
In the second game, Benedict jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Hornets came back with four runs in the bottom of the first on five hits and a Benedict error. Morris added five runs in the third inning on just one hit, two walks, and two hit batsman and a Benedict error to take a 10-2 lead.
Benedict takes on rival Claflin in a three-game series starting Friday night at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. as part of the Greenville Drive's seventh-annual HBCU Classic to honor the legacy of Jackie Robinson at 7 p.m. The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a single game at 1 p.m., then wrap up the series at 6 p.m. on Monday in the Capital City Baseball Classic at Spirit Communications Park.
