COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team wrapped up its home schedule with a pair of losses to Claflin University on Sunday afternoon.
Claflin took the first game 11-0 in five innings. Claflin rallied from a 6-1 deficit to score 12Â unanswered runs to take a 13-6 victory in the second game and complete the series sweep.
Claflin pitcher Tiaria Norman pitched her second consecutive one-hitter against Benedict in the first game.
Brianna Billie got a single in the third inning for Benedict's lone hit.
The Lady Tigers regrouped and jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings of the second game. Benedict scored five runs in the first inning as
Khayreyah Parrish had a RBI triple for Benedict's only hit in the inning. The Lady Tigers took advantage of three Claflin errors, a pair of walks, and a hit batter to get six baserunners on the bags.
Benedict added a run in the second inning as Billie led off with a single, stole second and third and came home on a wild pitch.
Claflin made a pitching change, bringing in Norman, who had held Benedict to two hits and struck out 19 in 12 innings of work in the first two games in the series. Norman pitched the final 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight and giving up one hit.
Claflin started its comeback with three runs in the third inning, getting a pair of back-to-back homers. The Lady Panthers tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning to make it 6-6. Claflin had one hit and took advantage of four Benedict errors in the inning to tie the game.
Claflin scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning on five hits and two more Benedict errors.
The Lady Tigers, now 22-13 overall and 8-9 in the SIAC, will make up a pair of conference games this week at Clark Atlanta and Fort Valley State. The SIAC tournament begins May 3 at Gordon Springs Complex in Albany, Ga.
