COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Romello Jones came off the bench to score a game-high 26 points to lead the Benedict College Tigers to a stunning 89-83 upset over the seventh-ranked Morehouse College Maroon Tigers in a SIAC basketball contest on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
With the win, the Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 3-13 overall and 2-7 in the SIAC. Morehouse had a nine-game winning streak snapped and falls to 13-2 overall and 7-2 in the SIAC.
The Tigers set season-highs in points scored (89), free-throws attempted (29), assists (20) and shooting percentage (51.8), while matching their season-high in free-throws made (20).
Jones added a team-high nine rebounds, and hit four 3-pointers. His 3-pointer with 44 seconds left broke an 80-80 tie and helped seal the win for Benedict.
DeShawn Graham scored 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
Davante Wiltshire scored 11 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists for a double-double.
Jalen Shuman added 11 points.
James Walker led Morehouse with 21 points.
Morehouse had a 21-20 lead in the first half before the Tigers went on a 9-0 run, with Jones capping off the spree with a 3-pointer for a 29-21 lead with 8:28 left in the half. Benedict had as much as a 10-point lead, 41-31 after a 3-pointer by
Darius Williams, and took a 45-38 lead at the halftime break.
The Tigers had as much as a 12-point lead in the second half, taking a 64-42 lead with 11:51 left to play after a 3-pointer by Graham. The Maroon Tigers slowly trimmed away at the lead until tying the contest at 66 with 8:15 on the clock.
Morehouse took its first lead of the second half, 78-77, on a 3-pointer by Tremell Gooden, with 2:06 left to play. Benedict countered with a 3-pointer by Graham with 1:41 remaining and never trailed again. The Maroon Tigers tied the game at 80 with 1:21 left to play, but Jones hit his big 3-pointer with 44 seconds left. Benedict hit four free throws and a late steal and layup down the stretch to close out the contest.
Benedict shot 63 percent in the first half and made 11-of-24 3-pointers (45.8 percent). Morehouse shot 48.4 percent for the game, but made just 6-of-24 (25 percent) of their 3-pointers. The Maroon Tigers also struggled at the free-throw line, going 15-of-24 (62.5 percent).
Benedict returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to take on Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is Jan. 31 against Claflin.
