COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Amari Lawson hit her first career out-of-the-park home run and drove in a run in the eighth inning to help rally the Benedict College Lady Tigers to an 11-10 victory in eight innings and give Benedict a sweep over Fayetteville State University in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Benedict won the first game 12-2 in five innings as
Marshallnae Bell hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs overall while pitching the Lady Tigers to victory.
Benedict improves to 4-4 on the season. Fayetteville State falls to 0-8.
Lawson helped ignite the comeback in the second game with a three-run blast over the right field fence in the fourth inning. It was her second career home run, with her first coming on an inside-the-park homer in 2017 against Livingstone.
Benedict rallied from a 7-0 deficit, then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as
Marshallnae Bell hit a two-out double and came home on a single by
Cherica Pye to knot the game at 9-9. Fayetteville State scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to make it 10-9.
The Lady Tigers led off the bottom of the eighth with a runner on second because of the international tiebreaker rule. Lawson hit a double to score
Lakirah Johnson, then advanced to third on a groundout. Lawson scored the game-winning run when she beat the throw to home plate on a fielder's choice by
Tandreanna Conyers.
Benedict is back in action at home on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Shaw, starting at 1 p.m.
