COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers erased a 13-point second-half deficit to take a three-point lead with 5:16 left to play, but the Tigers could not hold on as Albany State came away with a 75-67 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Benedict falls to 4-19 overall and 3-11 in the SIAC. Albany State improves to 11-14 overall and 10-5 in the SIAC.
DeShawn Graham led the Tigers with 19 points.
Romello Jones and
Davante Wiltshire added 12 points each. For the Golden Rams, Jared Harrington led the way with 21 points, while Tyrell Williams had 20.
Albany State had a 41-26 advantage in rebounding and outscored the Tigers 44-20 in the paint.
The Golden Rams had as much as a 10-point lead in the first half and led 29-23 at the halftime break. Albany State grew the lead to 13 points, 45-32, with 13:49 left in the second half. The Tigers stormed back and took a 58-56 advantage on a pair of free throws by
Fraser MacDonald with 5:55 remaining. After a basket by the Golden Rams to tie the game, Jones hit a 3-pointer to put Benedict back in front, 61-58, with 5:16 left in the game. Albany State scored the next six points for a 64-61 lead. After Benedict cut the lead to 68-65 with just under a minute remaining, the Golden Rams reeled off six straight points to seal the victory.
Benedict will play its final home game of the season on Monday against Fort Valley State at 7:30 p.m.
