COLUMBIA, S.C. – Morehouse College hit a 3-pointer just before the final buzzer to edge the Benedict College Tigers 73-72 on Saturday in the HRC Arena.
Benedict falls to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the SIAC. Morehouse College improves to 8-8 and 5-4 in the SIAC.
DeShawn Graham led the Tigers with 18 points, knocking down four 3-point shots.
Joseph Staton added 14 points and nine assists, while
Malachi McCoy posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Benedict jumped out to an early 15-7 lead six minutes into the game. The Tigers extended their lead to a game-high 11 points, 23-12, with 8:29 left in the first half as Staton led the charge with six points and four assists. Morehouse closed the gap to three points on several occassions, but Benedict held onto a 33-29 lead heading into halftime.
Graham scored 15 of his 18 points, including 13 of the first 19 points, in the second half. After holding a 72-65 lead with 41 seconds left in the game, Morehouse went on an 8-0 run, including a game-winning 3-point shot by Malik Kennedy as time expired to defeat the Tigers. It was the first lead of the second half for Morehouse, and their first lead since a 7-5 score three minutes into the game.
Morehouse held a 20-8 advantage in points off turnovers, but Benedict outscored Morehouse 28-18 in the paint.
Benedict will host Albany State University on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
