ATLANTA, Ga. – A late run in the final minutes of the game proved to be too late as the Benedict College men's basketball team fell to Clark Atlanta University, 70-65, on Monday night.
Benedict falls to 11-13 overall and 7-8 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta improves to 10-13 overall and 10-5 in the SIAC.
Deon Joyner led the Tigers with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Anthony Gomes also added 13 points, while
NyQuan McCombs contributed with 11 points and six assists.
Malachi McCoy scored 10 points and brought in eight rebounds.
There were eight lead changes and three ties in the first five minutes of the first half. Clark Atlanta then went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-10 lead with 12:59 left in the half. The Tigers answered back with a 13-2 run to retake the lead, 23-20, with 9:05 remaining until the break. Neither team would extend their lead larger than five points in the final nine minutes of the half as the Panthers held a 31-30 lead heading into the break.
To begin the second half, Clark Atlanta jumped out to a 44-32 lead with 13:13 remaining in the game. They extended their lead to as much as 18 points, 59-41, with 4:42 left in regulation. The Tigers made a run late, closing the gap to as close as five points, but it would not be enough.
Benedict held the advantage in bench points, outscoring Clark Atlanta 34-20.
Benedict will host their final home game of the season in the HRC Arena against Savannah State University at 7:30 p.m. on Monday night.
